Matilda Allen
 (1990 to 2004)

It is with great sadness that we must record that our beloved Matilda passed away on Sunday, 3rd October 2004 at 12.50pm.  She was approaching her birthday and would have been 14 years old had she lived.  She had been ill for nearly three weeks and, from the results of her blood and biopsy tests, we knew there was no hope for her.  On that last morning, when she was so weak that she was unable to walk or even stand without falling over, she gave a long plaintive wail and buried her head in the crook of my arm.  This small action of hiding her face was her usual signal to me when she was feeling anxious or distressed and so her message was very clear.  We understood.  We contacted our wonderful Vet and together made the hardest decision we have ever had to make.  DM came to snuggle up and touch noses with his sister for the last time and then, in tears, we left for the short drive to the veterinary clinic.  There, as she lay quietly in my arms, we kissed our darling wee puss farewell, and allowed her to peacefully sleep away her pain and worries once and for all.  She left us swiftly and, in death, she miraculously appeared to regain her youth!  She was beautiful; her soft fur taking on its wonderful familiar shine and lustre once more.  We brought her home again where David spent the afternoon making a beautiful wooden box for her - a real labour of his love.  We wrapped her carefully in her favourite blankets and gently laid her in her last "basket".  Finally, as dusk was falling at 5.00pm, with aching hearts and many tears, we buried our precious girl under the pear tree in our garden.  She touched our lives in a unique and very special way and I know we shall never stop missing her.  She was a dear, faithful, loving and devoted friend who always knew what to do for the best.  She may be gone but she will never be forgotten.  We sincerely believe she has gone through "the smaller gate" to a better place and is waiting for us to join her there someday.
God bless you and keep you darling 'Tilda ... until we meet again.

"The Lord is faithful to all His promises and loving towards all He has made.
The Lord upholds all those who fall and lifts up all who are bowed down.
The eyes of all look to You, and You give them their food at the proper time.
You open Your hand and satisfy the desires of every living thing.
The Lord is righteous in all His ways and loving towards all He has made."
(Psalm 145:13-17)

The Smaller Gate

"You can shed tears that she is gone,
or you can smile because she has lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she'll come back
or you can open your eyes and see all she's left.
Your heart can be empty because you can't see her,
or it can be full of the love you shared.
You can turn your back on tomorrow and live yesterday,
or you can be happy for tomorrow because of yesterday.
You can remember her and only that she's gone,
or you can cherish her memory and let it live on.
You can cry and close your mind; be empty and turn your back,
or you can do what she'd want ...
Open your eyes, smile, love and go on."
